Museum Casa dos Patudos

Museum Casa dos Patudos

The Museum Casa dos Patudos, was the former residence of José Relvas, a statesman who became famous as the man who proclaimed the Portuguese Republic on October 5th, 1910.  Here you can find a large collection of Portuguese and European paintings, including several from Dutch and Flemish masters of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Throughout his life Relvas was an avid art collector.  The museum contains his collection of fine paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics and silk tapestries.  Within this impressive collection are many pieces that once belonged in the Convento.  Among these are the Manueline Crowns and Armillary Spheres that were given to the Convento by king Manuel I himself, as a token of his appreciation for the simplicity and serenity of the place upon his visit in 1519.

Caves of Mira D'Aire

Caves of Mira D'Aire

The entrance to the caves sits 300m above sea level, and inside they reach a depth of over 180m.  Their formation goes back 150 million years to the Middle Jurassic age, when dinosaurs populated the Earth.

The caves are lit in such way as to emphasise the strange limestone formations, shaped over millions of years, with beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, waterfalls and underground lakes.  The descent into this magnificent underworld  is an unforgettable experience.

Legends and Secrets of Knights Templar

Legends and Secrets of Knights Templar

The Convent of Christ in Tomar, was the last Templar stronghold.  The convent and castle complex is a historic and cultural monument listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Here what you are about to discover is an architectural artefact, a relic of the mystery that shrouds the legends concerning lost treasures and secrets handed down to the select few, from ancient times.

The Knights Templars were a secret society whose true purpose remains a mystery.  Their story is one that has captured the fascination and curiosity of people throughout the ages.  When the order was dissolved in the 14th century the Portuguese branch was turned into the Knights of the Order of Christ, that later supported Portugal's maritime discoveries of the 15th century.
